While foot traffic is usually fine after a few hours, vehicles should stay off the fresh surface for at least 24 to 48 hours to allow the asphalt to cool and harden properly.
Resurfacing removes only the top layer of damaged pavement before laying a new coat, whereas repaving involves completely tearing out the entire structure down to the dirt and rebuilding the sub-base.
Routine maintenance schedules vary based on traffic volume, but applying a fresh sealcoat every two to three years typically provides the best protection against oxidation, cracking, and moisture damage.
Hot mix asphalt requires warm ambient temperatures to remain workable. Paving in freezing weather causes the material to cool too fast, which results in poor compaction and a severely weakened final surface.
